The ability to introduce single cells into an ICPMS and measure the elemental content in each cell, or tagged to each cell, accurately takes a dedicated, well-designed sample introduction system. Having this ability allows for investigators to better understand how much of a specific nanoparticle, metallodrug, or metal-based compound enters the cell. These cells or nanoparticles will vary in size from a few nm’s up to a few 100 μm’s. The typical cell types of interest will vary and with that the stability of the cell-line also varies, such that a gentle, controlled nebulization must be employed in order to not disrupt or lyse the cell.Complete system includes:
The SPP Kit adds the capability of sampling from vials with septa caps to a range of EX and DX autosamplers. The septum piercing capability allows for volatile samples to remained sealed while they await analysis, avoiding unwanted evaporation. Unlike many septa piercing probes, ESI is made from sapphire so there is no risk of contamination from a metal probe, while also maintaining a high strength.
The system works by first piercing the septa with the probe until the probe sleeve creates a small path for air to flow. This path prevents the creation of a vacuum inside the vial during the sampling which can cause cavitation of some samples. Once the sampling is complete the probe withdraws while a retaining arm holds the vial in place. To prevent accidents, the software can detect when an obstruction is met. For example, this can prevent damage to the probe if a vial with a non-septa cap is mistakenly placed in the rack.
